Franz Josef glacier and time to go home.

Rather than going back to Christchurch the way we came, we decided to drive up the west coast. Franz Josef Glacier being our key reason, then head to the airport. It was a long tiring day, the glacier, beach side scenery and Arthur's pass made it all worthwhile.
Firstly, don't believe any of the brochures. Glaciers are not white ! As they scrape and grind away at the mountain valley there is a lot of dirt produced, wind will dust its surface. Not to matter, I like glaciers anyway and the visit was a good break to the drive.
With hardly any traffic nor township decorations, the west coast is a beautiful drive, especially given that we had a sunny day.
Arthur's pass is no disappointment, with the road climbing up through a valley, the mountains high up on each side and the sweeping views as we descend it is a treat.
